Building the pod (Understanding Adobe Audition)

Some recent listener feedback

Hello Bruce.
Thank you for the pedagogical way of showing how to use the Adobe Audition 3 and making me so interested.
All the best
Kasper

Actually, Adobe and Lynda are the ones that should be thanking you.
I purchased both Audition and a subscription to Lynda based solely on what I'm hearing on your excellent programs.
And I hate the word podcasts.
It lumps you in with all the a**holes that think they are content producers because they have a microphone and an internet connection (and you are obviously a professional dedicated to his craft, and know how to produce content).
They just don't know what they don't know!
Scott Hess

I'm a long time listener to your Building the Pod and Sine Language shows, and would like to thank you for producing such informative and interesting podcasts.
I'm a media production student at the University of Lincoln in the UK and your Audition guides really helped me during the radio production aspect of my course.
Paul Hennell

I've only recently decided to get back into music production after a prolonged absence.
So, when it came to choosing a DAW, it came down to a choice between FL Studio and Audition.
Dollar wise, quite similar although FL Studio does offer more in the way of virtual instruments for this price range.
But I chose Audition for two clear reasons.
1. I really like the look and feel. The layout is just easy on the eye and made sense to me very quickly.
2. I knew I had a great teacher. I discovered Building the Pod through the Adobe web site and soon found Sine Language.
I have to thank you sincerely for your weekly tuition.
It has turned a somewhat severe learning curve into managable bite size pieces.
I simply can't overstate how thankful I am of your weekly podcasts.
Bye for now.
Ross Huntley

Oh thank you god a podcast showing you how to properly make podcasts. Thank you Bruce Williams!
Matt

No SL or BTP again

Filed under: Building the Pod, Integrate '09, Sine Language, trade show — Bruce Williams @ 0:24

Sorry guys… this weekend has seen the PMA Imaging Technology Show being held at Darling Harbour here in Sydney, so all of my time has been consumed by that (lots of ’special’ episodes of Shutters Inc.)
However, the good news is that today (Monday) is the first of a 3 day trade show for the pro audio industry (along with video and lighting).
And my plan is to once again take along the hand held recorder and grab some interviews on the trade show floor, so hopefully, I’ll have a ’special episode’ or 2 of Sine Language to release this week, too!
Stay tuned.

An advisory (or a rant)

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 22:18

Dear valued audio2u.com podcast listener,
If you know me at all, you would probably know that one thing I cherish in this world is consistency.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not averse to change if there’s a good reason for it!
What I hate is when things that SHOULD be consistent are not, because of laziness or sloppiness on the part of the creator.
What am I talking about here?
I’m talking about metadata in podcast mp3 files.
There are very few podcasts that I have come across where the metadata can be relied upon to remain consistent from one episode to the next.
Why is that important, you may well ask?
Well, the information contained in say, the ‘album’ field of the mp3 file will determine what ‘album’ the mp3 file appears to belong to on your mp3 player.
Likewise, the information contained in the ‘artist’ field will determine which artist the file appears under on the mp3 player.
So, if the content creator subtly changes the information in the ‘artist’ field from one episode to the next, then all those episodes of that podcast will not appear under the same ‘artist’ listing on your mp3 player.
No doubt, some of you have already been frustrated by this!
OK, you say. Bruce is anal about metadata. What of it?
Well, the reason for this post is to advise that I am making a change to the ‘album’ metadata for all 3 of my podcasts effective immediately.
Instead of all my podcasts belonging to the album ‘audio2u.com podcast’, the album name will now reflect the name of the podcast.
Hopefully, this will not be too disconcerting for you all.
It just means that all future episodes will not be listed under the same album (on your mp3 player, or in the WMP, iTunes, MediaMonkey database etc) as the episodes you currently have.
Thank you.
And now back to your regularly scheduled programming…

Beware: Technician at work!

Filed under: Building the Pod, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 22:50

Having totally missed the boat with regards getting photos of the rest of the studio relocation project, I thought I should at least grab a couple of snaps of Ritchie in action, wiring up my patchbays.
For those of you NOT in the professional audio industry, it might amaze you (or it may not) just how much cable is required to wire up even a modest little studio like mine.
As you can see, there is quite a pile of cable there on my desk… at a guess, about 80 metres (88 yards) of the stuff.
Ritchie has now taken that great bundle of spaghetti home with him, where he will finish off the soldering of all those cable ends to the patchbay.
I am SOOOOO glad I was able to pay someone else to do this for me!
If I had tried to do this, I probably would have become so frustrated by the process that it would have just languished, half-finished, forever and a day.
Ritchie reckons he’ll have the rest of it done by next week.
Schweeeeet!

Building the pod - episode 133

Filed under: !Podcasts, Building the Pod, Notch filter — Bruce Williams @ 12:00

This week, we look at the notch filter.

The waveform view of our sample audio

The spectral view of our sample audio.

Note the pink line running horizontally across the display between 5kHz and 6kHz

The spectral view of our sample audio, zoomed on the vertical scale

Here we can see that the offending tone is actually around 5700Hz

Spectral view after a 25dB cut

Notice how the line of the offending tone is approximately the same colour (and therefore the same amplitude) as the surrounding audio

Spectral view after a 15dB cut

Spectral view after a 45dB cut

Here, we can see that we’ve scooped out too much, which has left a hole in the audio we wanted to keep around the 5700Hz region

Building the pod - episode 132

Filed under: !Podcasts, AATranslator, Building the Pod, Equalization, Graphic — Bruce Williams @ 13:37

This week, Michael Rooney has finished his new program, AATranslator, which will the allow the import of various other DAW session formats into Audition.
Then, we look at the next item in the ‘Filters and EQ’ section… the graphic EQ.

The graphic EQ in 10 band mode. Each filter covers an octave.

The graphic EQ in 20 band mode. Each filter covers half an octave.

The graphic EQ in 30 band mode. Each filter covers one third of an octave.

The waveform display, after a cut at 8kHz, in 10 band mode. Notice how far the dip extends to the left and right of the centre frequency (it covers a full octave).

The spectral display, after a cut at 8kHz, in 10 band mode. Notice the area of the display which is NOT yellow, but rather orange (signalling a drop in amplitude).

The waveform display, after a cut at 8kHz, in 30 band mode. Notice how far the dip extends to the left and right of the centre frequency (it now only covers a third of an octave).

The spectral display, after a cut at 8kHz, in 30 band mode. Notice how the orange section of the display is shorter, because the amplitude drop is narrower than in 10 band mode.

Grab the swept sine wave here.

In episode 131, we look at the FFT filter.

From the help file:

“(Fast Fourier Transform) An algorithm based on Fourier Theory that Adobe Audition uses for filtering, Spectral View, and Frequency Analysis features. Fourier Theory states that any waveform consists of an infinite sum of sine and cosine functions, allowing frequency and amplitude to be quickly analyzed. Higher FFT sizes create more precise results but take longer to process.”

Photography 1 - Audio 0

Filed under: Building the Pod, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 9:11

Hi gang,
This was supposed to be a Sine Language week, but I have been brought unstuck by some MiniDV tapes which don’t want to be captured.
It’s a story barely worth the effort of retelling.
Although perhaps I should ask…
For those of you who have had experience in the video/MiniDV world, have you ever encountered tapes recorded on one particular brand of MiniDV camera NOT playing back on another brand of MiniDV camera?
I read (on Wikipedia, if I remember correctly) that there are ocassionally issues with the tape lubricants that different manufacturers use… and perhaps that’s what’s causing me grief.
Anyway, if you have any insight, leave a comment.
I’d love to hear from you.
Cheers.

Finally! BTP is back for 2009.
In this episode, we continue from where we left off with the last 3 entries in the “Delay and echo” sub-menu of the effects menu.
Also, Michael Rooney has been slaving away over a hot text editor, cranking out utilities for use with Audition.
Check out the Audition FX Management utility, and the SES Backup utility.
And if you find them useful, please make a donation (even if it’s only a couple of  bucks)!

A week of curve balls

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 19:06

Isn’t life just fun?
This week, I thought I was actually going to get all 3 podcasts recorded.
Had the whole week planned.
Buiding the pod - Tuesday night.
Shutters Inc - Wednesday night.
Sine Languge - Thursday night.
Lay low Friday night before going away for the weekend to attend a 40th birthday party for one of Cath’s girlfriends.
That was the plan on Monday.
But Monday arvo, I got a text message from a friend. The documentary he’s currently shooting and editing (and for which Dave and I are scoring the soundtrack) has suddenly had an abrupt shortening of its deadline. It’s got to be finished NEXT WEEK! Aaarrrggghhh.
“OK”, I thought. “We’ll ditch Sine Language on Thursday night so Dave and I can do what we need to do. After all, no-one was expecting SL this week anyway.”
Tuesday night rolls around.
I record an episode of BTP to the newly acquired Marantz PMD580 flash recorder. 45 minutes worth. I drag it into Audition ready to edit, and find the whole thing is BADLY distorted because I screwed up the settings!
Oh ye Gods.
And to make it worse, it was something that I should have picked up.
Too eager.
Too full of enthusiasm.
So, now we’re down 2 of the 3.
Bugger.
“Never mind”, I think. “At least we’ll get Shutters Inc done tomorrow night”.
Wednesday night rolls around and I text Shelton.
“We still good for 8pm?”
“Mate, I’ve had an emergency come up. Can we re-schedule?”
To which I had to reply that no, unfortunately this is the only night I’m free (as by this stage, I’d already promised Cath that Friday night we’d spend together).
So, there ya have it, folks.
A week of curve balls.
The only up shot was that Dave and I DID get some nice work done on Thursday night, and doco-maker JB is very happy with the results.
One out of four.
Not quite the odds Meatloaf was happy to settle for.
There’s always next week…
